This blog is about Pinerolo, a small town with great history, and a house where we offer apartments to guests for short holidays. Pinerolo, with Roman roots and well known from the Middle-Ages, saw the begin of Savoia dynasty of later Italian Kings. Here the world known "Caprilli riding method" was developed last century and the town the seat of the "Nizza Cavalleria" most famous riding school and the larger European riding manège, a masterpiece of this kind of architecture and still existing.
For its good climate Pinerolo is called "Nice of Piedmont", and it is a perfect starting point for trips to the surrounding hills and mountains, to the Sestrière ski fields, to the Waldensian valleys Germanasca and Pellice, refuge of the oldest protestant movements in Europe. The former capital of Italy, Turin is only 35 km far, and its centre can be reached by train in 40 minutes, the station being only 10 minutes walk from our house.
Needless to say, Turin is worth visiting for all possible kind of interests: form a variaty of museums (automobiles, Egyptian, cinema, history of Italy's unifications, etc.), art galleries, royal palace, mode shops, Opera, theaters, etc.
In Pinerolo, from the upper apartments of our house as well as from many parts of the town there is a view of the 3800 m high Monviso, which dominates almost the whole Piedmont and is the source of the main italian river, the Po. For mountain climbing, mountain-bike riding, horse riding and many other sports including swimming Pinerolo and its surroundings offer a good deal of possibilities.
The cultural life in Pinerolo is also good developed, it includes two larger theaters, concerts are offered in many churches and other venues; there are exhibitions of artisan products, yearly representations of historical events like the "iron masque" (a mysterious prisoner of French King Louis XIV, hosted in the fortress during the French occupation of the town).
The market in the central place each Saturday is a well know meeting point of people of the town and surroundings as well as of the tourists. Last but not least, there are art galleries, many museums about social and natural history, and the national museum of riding.
In Pinerolo and surroundings villages there is a huge variety of typical restaurants, from the cheap pizzerias to the selected high level gourmet restaurants. The Piedmont "slow-food" movement, which considers cooking as an art and a healthy devoted duty opposing the fast-food industry has in Pinerolo a stronghold not only in many quality restaurants but even in cheaper "trattorie".
